NATURE & OUTDOORS · CAPE BRETON
The Bras d’Or Lake fills the centre of Cape Breton Island. It is really a large tidal estuary, a mix of salt and fresh water connected to the Atlantic, and its shoreline wraps around inlets, islands and quiet rural communities. In 2011 the area was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Many Cape Breton itineraries pass the lake without stopping. Following its shores leads to Baddeck, Iona and Highland Village, Mi’kmaw communities and wide, calm views that contrast with the rugged outer coast.
A lakeside village and the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site.
Gaelic heritage above the Barra Strait.
Quiet roads with water views and photo stops.
The northern arms of the lake begin west of Sydney, so lake views start within about half an hour of the city.
