Before you choose
Cape Breton is bigger than it looks on a map. Choosing one region and doing it well makes a better day than trying to see everything. Each plan below starts and ends in Sydney.
Itinerary 1: History and the coast
- 1
Drive to Louisbourg (about 40 minutes) and explore the fortress.
- 2
Have lunch in the town of Louisbourg.
- 3
Walk the lighthouse trail or make coastal stops on the way back.
- 4
Finish with an evening on the Sydney waterfront.
Itinerary 2: Highlands and the Cabot Trail
- 1
Start early for Baddeck (about an hour).
- 2
Join the Cabot Trail and follow the section that suits the season.
- 3
Stop at lookouts and take a short walk in the national park.
- 4
Return via Baddeck in the evening.
Itinerary 3: The lake and Gaelic culture
- 1
Follow the Bras d’Or Lake to Iona (an hour or a little more).
- 2
Visit the Highland Village Museum.
- 3
Stop for lunch with lake views.
- 4
Spend the afternoon in Baddeck before returning to Sydney.
Fitting a day around a cruise schedule
On a port day, subtract the time to disembark and a margin before all-aboard. Itinerary 1 fits most port calls; the others need a long day in port or a shortened version.
