HISTORY & CULTURE · CAPE BRETON
Iona is a small rural community in central Cape Breton, on the Barra Strait where two parts of the Bras d’Or Lake meet. It is best known for the Highland Village Museum (Baile nan Gàidheal), which explores the culture of the Scottish Gaels who settled much of the island.
Cape Breton is one of the few places outside Scotland where Gaelic culture has been passed down for generations. Highland Village brings that story to life through historic buildings, interpreters, language and music, and its hillside setting has some of the best lake views on the island.
