Getting from Sydney to the Trail
The Cabot Trail is a loop, and most visitors from Sydney join it near Baddeck after about an hour on Highway 105. Another option is to head for the Englishtown area and join the eastern side of the Trail. The Englishtown ferry, a short cable ferry across St. Ann’s Harbour, can save time when it is operating.
How long does it take?
The loop is roughly 300 km. Without stops, the driving time is around five hours. With lookouts, a lunch break and a short walk, plan on eight hours or more from Baddeck back to Baddeck, plus the drive to and from Sydney. That is why many visitors choose a section rather than the full loop.
Clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Driving clockwise (Baddeck, Ingonish, Cape North, then down the west coast to Chéticamp) puts you in the lane nearest the sea along the western Highlands. Driving counter-clockwise keeps you on the inside lane there, which some nervous passengers prefer. Both work, and on the day the weather matters more than the direction.
Stops worth planning around
- The Skyline Trail: allow two to three hours if you walk it
- Chéticamp, for Acadian culture and a lunch stop
- Pleasant Bay and the climb over MacKenzie Mountain
- Lookouts above Ingonish and Cape Smokey
- Baddeck and the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site
Full loop or a section?
With one day and a Sydney start, the full loop is possible but long. A section leaves time to enjoy the stops: for example the eastern side to Ingonish and Cape Smokey, or the western Highlands around Chéticamp and the Skyline Trail. Cruise passengers usually need a shorter route still.
When to go
July and August bring the warmest weather and the most services. Late September to mid-October is fall-colour season and the Trail’s busiest time. Some businesses in the north close for the winter.
