Louisbourg was one of the most important French settlements in North America in the 18th century: a fortified port town that was captured twice before its walls were demolished. In the 1960s Parks Canada began reconstructing about a quarter of the town, creating one of the largest historical reconstructions in North America.
Few places let you walk into the 1740s quite so completely. In season, costumed interpreters, period food, demonstrations and the sheer scale of the walls make it a memorable half day for history lovers and families alike.
